Change How you do Things

Did you know that by taking relatively small decisions you can make big differences to the amount of energy you use and reduce your impact on the environment?

Here's our top ten tips:

  1. Turn your room thermostat down by 1 degree and save 10% off your fuel bill.
  2. Wash your clothes at 30 degrees instead of 40 it will save you 40% electricity.
  3. Get in and out of your fridge and/or freezer as quickly as possible. For every minute the fridge/freezer is open it takes 3 minutes of energy to get it back to temperature.
  4. Cook more with a steamer or a microwave and if you use a hob make sure you have pan lids that fit.
  5. Turn your hot water thermostat down to 60 degrees.
  6. Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need for a drink.
  7. Close your curtains at dusk and keep the heat in your home.
  8. Turn your tv and stereos off standby.
  9. Take a shower instead of a bath and save energy and water.
  10. Turn the lights off when you leave a room.

Smart Meters

The Energy White Paper (May 2007) dictates that smart meters will be available from 2008 for all customers who request them and in all homes in the next 10 years.

Individual monitoring units called Electrisave are also available and simple to use without the need to change your electricity meter.  The meter simply fits onto the "tails" of your domestic electric meter, set it at the rate you pay for Kwh and watch the meter monitor your electricity consumption.

Not only that but the Electrisave measures how much carbon dioxide you're emitting and the temperature of the room it's in along with humidity.
