How does it work?

In the UK, the earth a few metres below ground level is at a constant temperature of 12C all year round. Ground source heat pumps transfer this ground heat into space heating for a home. The system requires a ground loop - a series of pipes buried in the ground, either in a borehole or a horizontal trench. The pipe is filled with water and antifreeze, which is able to absorb heat from the ground.

What are the benefits?

Ground source heat pumps are highly efficient. For every unit of energy used to power the pump, 3-4 units of heat are produced. It is a cheaper form of space heating than oil, LPG and electric storage heaters but more expensive than gas.

How much does it cost?

The installed cost of a typical 8kW system would vary between £8,000 to £12,000, plus the price of the heating system (radiators or underfloor heating).

What grants are available?

The Low Carbon Buildings Programme is offering a grant of £1,200 or 30% of the eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
